Why We're Carrying Salmon River Solutions
There are a lot of rifle accessories on the market that solve problems most hunters don't really have. Salmon River Solutions caught our attention for the opposite reason.
Their products address something we see more and more often: hunters using modern bipods and tripods with rifles that were never designed around those mounting systems.
Lawson & Cooper Arms is now a dealer for Salmon River Solutions, and we've brought in a selection of their rails and tripod accessories that make the most sense for the rifles and hunting setups we see here in the Southeast.
What Is Salmon River Solutions?
Salmon River Solutions builds rifle mounting components centered around practical field use. Their product line includes ARCA rails, Picatinny rails, combination rails, rifle-specific mounting solutions and other accessories designed to help shooters integrate modern bipods and tripods with their rifles.
What separates a lot of the SRS products from competition-style rail systems is their emphasis on lightweight hunting applications. Instead of assuming every rifle has a wide chassis fore-end, many of their products are designed around conventional hunting stocks and compact mounting footprints.
Why ARCA Is Becoming More Common on Hunting Rifles
ARCA started out as a photography mounting standard and has become increasingly useful in the shooting world because it allows a rifle to clamp directly into a compatible tripod head.
For a hunter, that can eliminate the need to balance the rifle loosely on top of a tripod or use a separate saddle-style clamp. It can also let the shooter move the rifle forward or rearward in the clamp to adjust balance.
The downside is that many traditional hunting rifles don't have an ARCA rail, and adding a large full-length rail can defeat the purpose of carrying a light rifle. That's where the compact SRS products make sense.
ARCA + Picatinny: Two Systems on One Rifle
One of the SRS products we're stocking is the ARCA + PIC rail. It combines a compact ARCA section with a Picatinny section in the same unit.
That gives a hunter the option of clamping the rifle into an ARCA-compatible tripod while retaining a conventional Picatinny mounting point for a bipod. For many hunting rifles, that's probably all the rail most shooters actually need.
The Trinity Rail: ARCA, Picatinny and Spartan
The Trinity Rail is one of the products that made the SRS lineup particularly interesting to us.
It combines ARCA, Picatinny and compatibility with the Spartan Precision quick-detach system into one compact rail.
We already work directly with Spartan Precision Equipment, so this gives us a very useful crossover between the two product lines. A hunter using a Spartan bipod can retain that quick-detach capability while also gaining ARCA and Picatinny options on the same rifle.
What About a Traditional Hunting Rifle with a Sling Stud?
Not every good hunting rifle has M-LOK slots or a chassis.
There are plenty of rifles in the woods every season with a conventional stock and a single front sling stud. SRS addresses those rifles with its EZ ARCA and EZ Picatinny systems.
These compact adapters provide a way to add a modern mounting interface to compatible traditional stocks without automatically installing a large rail system.
That makes them especially interesting for hunters who like their existing rifle and simply want to modernize the way they attach a bipod or tripod.
When Does a Longer Hunters Rail Make Sense?
A compact rail isn't always the answer.
If the rifle is being set up specifically around tripod shooting, a longer ARCA surface gives the shooter more room to adjust the rifle's balance point in the tripod clamp.
The SRS Hunters Rail is aimed more toward that type of setup. It offers additional mounting surface while still being designed with a hunting rifle in mind rather than simply adapting a heavy competition rail.
Don't Forget the Shooting Bag
Not every tripod-supported shot requires the rifle to be clamped directly into the tripod.
The SRS Tac Table Lite provides a small platform that can be mounted to a compatible tripod and used with a shooting bag. That opens up another option for field positions, observation or situations where a bag provides a better support than clamping the rifle directly into the tripod.
Which One Do You Actually Need?
That's the part we're most interested in helping with.
There isn't much benefit in buying an ARCA rail because ARCA is popular if the rest of your equipment doesn't use ARCA. The same applies to Picatinny, Spartan and the different mounting methods used on various stocks.
Before choosing a rail, look at four things:
- The rifle and stock you're mounting it to
- How the rifle currently accepts accessories
- The bipod you're using
- The tripod and tripod head you're using
Once those four pieces are known, the right mounting solution is usually much easier to identify.
