How much does the ATF tax stamp cost?
As of January 1, 2026, the federal tax on suppressors and other NFA items is $0. This is a permanent change, not a temporary discount. You still file the same ATF Form 4 application — you just no longer pay the $200 tax that used to come with it.
Is it legal to own a suppressor in Alabama?
Yes. Suppressors are legal to own in 42 states, including Alabama. As long as you meet the federal requirements and pass your background check, you're clear to own one here.
How old do I have to be to buy a suppressor?
You must be at least 21 years old to receive a suppressor from a licensed dealer like Lawson & Cooper Arms. This is a federal requirement and applies whether you're registering as an individual or through a trust.
Is fingerprinting really free if I buy my suppressor from you?
Yes. If you purchase your NFA item directly from Lawson & Cooper Arms, we waive the fee for your Live Scan fingerprinting, your EFT file creation, and your eForm 4 filing — all of it, no charge. And that file is yours to keep and reuse on everything you buy after this one.

Individual vs. Trust

Should I buy as an individual or through a trust?
Buying as an individual is simpler and has no setup cost, but only you may possess and use the suppressor unless you're present. A trust lets you name other responsible persons who can legally use the item on their own, and it can simplify passing the item to an heir down the road. We prepare NFA trusts through our partnership with 10scan and National Gun Trusts — attorney-drafted, ATF41F-compliant, and ready to file — bundled with your EFT fingerprinting for $135.
Can I let someone else shoot my suppressor?
If it's registered to you as an individual, someone else can only use it while you're present. If it's registered to a trust, any responsible person named on that trust can use it on their own, without you there.
Can I add my suppressor to a trust later if I bought it as an individual?
Yes, but it requires a new transfer process, including a new Form 4 and new fingerprints and photos for each trust responsible person. Since the tax is now $0, there's no additional tax cost — just the added paperwork and wait time.

Do I need fingerprints and a photo?
Yes. If you're registering as an individual, you'll need fingerprints and a passport-style photo. If you're registering through a trust, every responsible person listed on the trust needs their own fingerprints and photo as well.
How long does approval take?
It varies. Electronic Form 4 applications have ranged from about a week to a few months since the 2026 tax stamp changes took effect, depending on ATF volume at the time. We'll give you our current best estimate when you file — ask us for the latest number when you're ready to apply.
Can I take the suppressor home the same day I apply?
No. Your suppressor stays at our shop until the ATF approves your Form 4 and the registration is complete. Once approved, you'll complete a standard Form 4473 and NICS check before taking possession.
