Suppressor Bore Size 101: A Rifle Caliber Guide

The question I get more than any other at the suppressor counter isn’t “which one sounds the best” — it’s “will this one work on my rifle.” Fair question, because the honest answer is that not every suppressor works on every rifle, and getting this wrong isn’t a performance issue. It’s a safety issue. Here’s how bore sizing actually works across the rifle calibers people bring in most, so you know what to look for before you buy anything.
The one rule that matters more than any other
Every suppressor is built around a bore — the channel the bullet travels through — sized for a maximum bullet diameter. You can always run something smaller through it than what it’s rated for. You can never safely run something bigger. Push an oversized bullet through an undersized bore and it doesn’t pass through cleanly — it strikes the internal baffles on the way out. That’s called a baffle strike, and at best it destroys an expensive suppressor. At worst, it creates a dangerous pressure event at the muzzle with the gun still in your hands.
There’s a second spec that matters just as much and gets overlooked constantly: energy rating. A suppressor’s bore might be plenty big for a given bullet, but if the cartridge behind it generates more pressure and energy than the can is built to handle, that’s still outside the suppressor’s limits even though the bullet technically fits. Manufacturer spec sheets list both a caliber/bore rating and an energy rating in foot-pounds — you need to satisfy both, not just the bore diameter.
Rimfire: .22 LR and friends
The smallest bore class, and the one place where a dedicated rimfire can genuinely outperforms a do-it-all rifle suppressor. .22 LR runs a bore around .222–.224 inches, and rimfire-specific suppressors are built lightweight, easy to disassemble for cleaning (rimfire ammo is dirty compared to centerfire), and optimized for that low-pressure, low-velocity case. You can run .22 LR through a lot of centerfire cans rated for larger bores, but you’ll give up meaningful sound performance doing it, and cleaning gets to be a real chore.
5.56 / .223 and 300 Blackout
Both of these run a bore around .224 (5.56) or share the .308 bolt/bore family in the case of 300 Blackout’s .308-diameter bullet. This is the most common caliber-specific suppressor category on the market, and it’s also where a lot of first-time buyers land, since an AR-15 is usually the first host somebody’s suppressing. A dedicated 5.56 can will outperform a .30-cal can on a 5.56 host, but plenty of people buy a .30-cal-rated suppressor specifically because it covers both 5.56 and 300 Blackout — plus everything below it — in a single purchase.
.308 Winchester / 7.62 NATO — the do-it-all middle tier
This is the bore class most people end up buying if they only want to own one suppressor, and there’s a good reason for that: a .308-bore suppressor covers a huge range of common rifle calibers below it, including 5.56, 300 Blackout, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 Grendel, 6.5 PRC, 7mm-08, .270 Winchester, and even 30-30 Winchester and 7.62x39, as long as the specific can’s energy rating covers whatever you’re feeding it. This is genuinely the highest-utility single suppressor purchase for someone who owns a mixed safe of ARs and bolt guns, which is most of my customers.
Worth knowing: many .308-rated suppressors are also rated for magnum loads like 300 Winchester Magnum, 300 Weatherby Magnum, or 300 Remington Ultra Magnum — but that’s a per-model question, not a given. Check the specific suppressor’s energy rating before assuming a magnum load is covered.
6.5mm and 7mm cartridges
6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 6.5 Grendel, and the 7mm family (7mm-08, 7mm Remington Magnum, 7mm Backcountry) all run bores smaller than .308, so a .308-rated can handles them without issue from a bore-fit standpoint — again, assuming the energy rating covers the specific load, which matters more with magnum-class cartridges pushing more pressure. You don’t need a dedicated 6.5 or 7mm suppressor unless you specifically want the sound performance advantage of a bore matched tighter to your actual bullet diameter.
.338 class: Lapua Magnum, Win Mag, ARC, and 8.6 Blackout
This is where people most often get it wrong, because it’s easy to assume a .30-cal can that handles “basically everything” also covers this class. It doesn’t. A .338-inch bullet needs a suppressor with a bore rated for .338 caliber or larger — commonly labeled around .36 caliber or roughly 9.1mm to give a bit of working clearance. This applies whether you’re shooting traditional .338 Lapua Magnum and .338 Winchester Magnum, or newer cartridges purpose-built for suppressed use like 8.6 Blackout and .338 ARC, both of which have picked up real popularity this year for suppressed big-game hunting.
8.6 Blackout specifically is a necked-up 6.5 Creedmoor case firing a heavy .338-caliber bullet — typically 285 to 350 grains subsonic — on the standard .308 bolt face, so it drops into an AR-10 or .308-pattern bolt gun without any proprietary parts. But that .338-inch bullet absolutely requires a .338-rated bore. Running it through a .30-cal can you already own is the single most common mistake people make coming from 300 Blackout, since the two cartridges look similar on paper but the bullet diameter is completely different. Dedicated .338-class cans, along with big-bore multi-caliber suppressors rated well past .338 — the Dead Air Primal is a good example, with a .458-caliber bore and an energy rating that comfortably covers .338 Lapua-class pressures — both work fine here. What matters is confirming the actual bore and energy rating before you pull the trigger, not the name or reputation of the suppressor.
Big bore: .45-70, .458 SOCOM, .450 Bushmaster and beyond
At the top end, you’re looking at a bore rated around .458 caliber or larger. These are genuinely big-bore suppressors, and most of them are built as true multi-caliber cans that cover everything from 9mm pistol calibers on the low end up through .45-70 Government and .458 SOCOM on the high end, trading a little bit of sound performance at any single caliber for the ability to run one suppressor across a very wide range of hosts. If you hunt with a lever gun in .45-70 alongside modern rifles in smaller calibers, this class is worth a look specifically because of that versatility — one can, most of your safe.
Before you buy: check the spec sheet, not the reputation
Suppressor model names and marketing don’t always tell you the actual bore and energy rating — plenty of suppressor lines include multiple variants across different bore classes under similar-sounding names. Always confirm the specific bore diameter and energy rating against the manufacturer’s published spec sheet for the exact model you’re buying, especially if you’re planning to run it across more than one caliber. The bottom line
Smaller bullet through a bigger bore: fine, if a little less optimized. Bigger bullet through a smaller bore: never, under any circumstances. Match the bore diameter and the energy rating to your actual cartridge, verify both against the spec sheet rather than assumption, and you’ll get a suppressor setup that’s both safe and appropriate for what you’re actually shooting.
